Rock and roll developed into new rock styles. Heavy metal, for example, sounds harder and more distorted than rock. There are a lot of guitar solos. Melody is often less important than creating distortion.

Glam rock is theatrical and glitzy. It is easier to listen to than heavy metal. The tunes are catchy. The performers wear flamboyant clothes and a lot of make-up. Punk sounds angry. Lyrics are more shouted than sung. Drumbeats are usually very simple and fast.

Progressive rock is often thematic, that is, it repeats the same theme in different pieces. It uses a lot of electronic effects. The lyrics are often nonsense.
