Q1(a) Explain the reasons for measuring biological indices when assessing water quality in surface waters. Describe indices that are tested, and sampling methods that may be used. (10 marks)
Q1(b) Describe the following systems of environmental licensing, that exist under the remit of the EPA: (i) IPPC licence (ii) Waste license (iii) Wastewater discharge authorisation license (15 marks)
Q2(a) Describe the following hydro-electric turbines: (i) Francis turbine. (ii) Pelton turbine. (6 marks)
Q2(b) Explain the basis of a wind-pumped storage electricity generation system. (6 marks)
What are the possible planning issues associated with such a scheme? (3 marks)
Q2(c) An application is to be submitted for a large scale quarry development. List what you would expect to be major environmental impacts that could be associated with such a development. Describe in detail how these points should be addressed in an Environmental Impact Assessment. (10 marks)
Q3(a) Describe the methodology used to select a suitable site for a municipal landfill site (8 marks)
