The Shooting Star
By; Gloven Ramos
One rainy night, August 14, 2010, I am stranded on the balcony of a closed coffee shop. It’s
already twelve midnight, all establishments are closed. It is rare to pass a taxi on that street on that time.
Sitting on a metal chair, headphone on my ears, waiting the rain to stop so I could walk back to home, I
feel the cold wind touches my face.
I saw someone running to the coffee shop. She put out her jacket and she put it on the table
besides her. She saw me sitting, watching her wiping her hands.
“Good evening!” she greeted me.
I smile back to her, I secretly off my music so I could hear her whenever she talks to me.
“Stranded too? I think this rain will never stop till morning.” She said.
“You can wish to a shooting star to stop this rain.” I joke.
“Well, watch your words before you wish in a shooting star.”
“Yeah...” I responded to her weird reply. “But i think it will stop before 1:00am.”
“How did you know?”
“Nothing lasts forever.”
She pulls a chair and sits on it. “You’re a bitter.”
“How could you say that?”
“Only bitter persons believe that nothing lasts forever.” She smiles on me.
We talk a lot of things on that night at the balcony of the coffee shop.
A car stops on the front of us.
“Oh, here they are. Are you sure you would not come with me? I will drop you at your home.”
“No, thanks, it’s okay. I will just walk.”
“But it still raining. Come on, you’re just shy.”
“Don’t worry. I can take it. I will just wait here.”
After that night, I never see her again. I don’t know who she is, where she came from, I don’t
even know her name.
Few months later, while on the grocery store, I heard a familiar voice talking with her friend;
“Wait, I don’t eat kiwi.” She said.
I find where that voice came from. I saw her. I appreciate more her beauty when I see her in
daylight. I tried to approach her but I got nervous. I think, that one-hour conversation is not a big deal
with her. I let her gone.
I paid my groceries and put it in my car in the basement. When I’m on the exit of the basement, I
saw her again, alone, standing and waiting for a taxi, I think. I drove closer to her.
“Hey?” I greet her. “Do you remember me?”
“Umm... I’m sorry, but no. Where do we meet?” I’m right, she did not remember me.
“Well, doesn’t need to know. I just thought to drive you to your destination, but it is not nice to do
it if you not remember me.”
“Are you mad?”
“Huh? Why?”
“Because I don’t remember you.”
“No. I’m not. It will just make you awkward. I don’t mean any offense.”
“Okay.”
“Yeah, okay, well, have a nice day!”
“You too.”
I drove away... it was really awkward. I regret what I did.
7:00 pm at the same day. I’m in the restaurant for dinner. Yes, I am alone. I live like this. While
writing my notes, someone approaches me.
“Hi, are you alone?” a girl voice.

I’m in the restaurant for dinner. Yes, I am alone. I live like this. While writing my notes, someone approaches me. “Hi, are you alone?” a girl voice.

I look up and shock on what I see. It is her. “Oh, hi.” I said. “You have a friend with you?” “No, I’m alone. you can sit.” “Thanks.” She sits and started to apologize to me. “Uhm.. I just want to apologize on what happen this morning. You know, it is few months ago when we’ve met...once.” “So, you really intent to stop here and apologize to me?” “Well, a sort of... yes, absolutely.” “You know, i understand, don’t worry.” “Well, thanks.” “Do you want to eat?” “Yes, but you’re already done. I can’t stand eating here while you’re watching me.” “Oh.. you’re bold... I like you.” “No need to pretend like a teenager.” I call the waiter and order again for some foods. “You will eat again?” she was shock. “Desserts only.” We eat together. I feel no uncomfortable feeling while I am with her...and I think she feels the same way. We talk while we’re eating, no awkwardness, laughing on each other’s jokes, we seem like we know each other for a long time. “I think, this is the time to start this friendship.” I said. “I’m Amber Garcia.” I introduce myself first. “Nice name.” “Actually, it’s just my nickname.” “So your real name surely nicer than your nickname. What it is?” “Ambrosio Carlolito Garcia.” “What?” she pardons. “Ambrosio Carlolito Garcia.” I said it clearly. She smile at first, but...the longer she thinks of it, the funnier it is to her, until she laugh out loud. “Hahahahahahahah!!!!” laughing hard while tapping the table. “I know, your nickname is ‘Amber’ because your name is ‘Ambrocio’” She laughs again and we get the attention of the people inside the restaurant...but we don’t care. “Okay, stop.. So what’s your name?” I ask. “Lea, Lea Reymundo.” “What’s your nickname?” “Ohh... if you’re trying to avenge for your name...you can’t.” “Really? So what yous?” “Liling.” I smile because it is funny. “You’re laughing! ‘Liling is not that funny as a nickname.” “I know. But I’m just trying to revenge.”

Since that night, we see each other almost every day. Yes, were just flirting, dating every free time, but it doesn’t mean we’re actually flirting literately...we like each other. Infatuation or crush, I like her so much that eventually I fell in love with her. Days after days, my feelings grows. I feel like; “Is it true love?” Everything is so perfect. We’re different on some things, but we’re the same on so many things. I thought this kind of love exists only in movies and fantasies. I realized, at my old age, there are still plenty of things that I didn’t know. True love really exists.

“How could you say that?” “Only bitter persons believe that nothing lasts forever.” She smiles on me. We talk a lot of things on that night at the balcony of the coffee shop. A car stops on the front of us. “Oh, here they are. Are you sure you would not come with me? I will drop you on your home.” She offers again. “No, thanks, it’s okay. I will just walk.” “But it still rains. Come on, you’re just shy.” “Don’t worry. I can take it. I will just wait here.” After that night, I never see her again. I don’t know who she is, where she came from, I don’t even know her name.
