The narrator is Homer, although within his narration Odysseus tells his own story in first person in Books 9-12. Perspective and Narrator The Odyssey is told in the past tense and includes flashbacks. Tense The Odyssey refers to the story of its main character, Odysseus (Ulysses in Latin). CHARACTERS THE ODYSSEY – THE RETURN OF ODYSSEUS TO ITHACA
CHARACTERS Odysseus is the hero of the story. He is the King of Ithaca and a brave and clever warrior. He fought a long war in Troy and has been trying his hardest to return home ever since. Penelope is Odysseus’s beautiful wife and the Queen of Ithaca. She has a lot men trying to marry her! But she remains loyal to Odysseus till the end. Telemachus is Odysseus’s son who has been waiting for his father to come home his whole life. Athena is the friendly goddess of wisdom who helps Odysseus get home. Polyphemus is Poseidon’s Cyclops son who’s favorite snack is Greek soldiers. Poseidon is the god of the Sea who is furious at Odysseus for blinding his Cyclops son. Zeus is the King of all gods who live on Mount Olympus. You don’t want to get on his bad side! Circe is the beautiful witch-goddess who os not very nice at first, but ends up helping Odysseus. Calypso is a lonely Goddess who holds Odysseus captive on her island for seven years. King Alcinous is the King of Phoenicia who Odysseus tells his epic tale to. He feels sorry for Odysseus and helps him get home. Aeolus is the god of the Winds who lives on a tall, floating island. Helios is the god of the Sun who gets angry if you eat his cattle!
