The transport sector is responsible for 30% of total CO2 emissions in Europe, of which 72% is
produced by road transport alone; electric cars must be more and more common in everyday life
and not the exception.
Tesla Motors is one of the biggest car company which produces electric vehicles and car spare
parts for other car companies. Founded in 2003, Tesla aims at mass production and general
innovation in the world of cars and home automation. A large part of population uses cars with
petrol or hybrid engines, which leads to significant pollutant emissions; for this reason the mission
of Tesla is very important. Making “the electrical” part of our everyday life is one of the main
goals of Tesla.
Tesla, whose name was inspired by the American inventor NIkola Tesla, was founded in Jun 2003
by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. They invested their financial savings in creating the
society, but quickly they found an important partner, Elon Musk( the brain behind Paypal, Spacex
and SolarCity ).
Musk started the first financing, he was able to raise funds for more than 150 millions euros in
less than 5 years. Musk became the Tesla’ s CEO (Chief Executive Officer) in 2008 and in 2021 has
become the richest man in the world.
In June 2010 they arrived on Wall Street , thanks to the IPO( Initial Public Offering) Tesla Motors
raised funds for more than 160 million euros.
In spite of a drop of quotes (for a fire of a Model S), Tesla won the “Gold Palm” for the best title of
Nasdaq100 2013.
In the following years Tesla continued to grow up, selling more than 30 thousand electric cars in
2014 and more than 50 thousand electric cars in 2015. Then they improved their production of
“Model S” and “Model X” arriving to 1800 vehicles, more than 60 thousand units in 2016.
The peak production arrived with “Tesla Model III”, a low cost electric car(start to 35000$); during
the introduction week Tesla reached 200 thousand pre-orders.
Another important introduction in the Tesla’s world is “Gigafactory”(a factory that is able to
produce 500.000 batteries a year).
Today Tesla represents the most quoted automotive company on the stock exchange.
TECHNOLOGY
From a technological point of view, the most important characteristic about their vehicles is the
type of battery used to accumulate Energy.
Other car companies use “single-purpose” storage cells( cells used only by car companies), Tesla
uses batteries composed by thousands of lithium-ion cells 18650. These kinds of batteries are
cylindrical and small and we could find them in our laptop or in other electronic devices.

TECHNOLOGY

From a technological point of view, the most important characteristic about their vehicles is the type of battery used to accumulate Energy. Other car companies use “single-purpose” storage cells( cells used only by car companies), Tesla uses batteries composed by thousands of lithium-ion cells 18650. These kinds of batteries are cylindrical and small and we could find them in our laptop or in other electronic devices.

By using this technology their models are cheaper and lighter than others. These batteries are really cheap; if you break your battery they will replace it very quickly and only for 60$. With “Model S” they revolutionized technology about repositioning of batteries; in the “Tesla Roadster” batteries are located behind the seats, in “Model S” they are located on the platform for saving space. In this way passengers have more space in the car and the driver needs only 90 seconds for changing them. The Tesla Model S has been the first electric car to win the prize “Motor Trend” of the year. About the charging stations, the “Supercharger Network” is composed by 480 volts distributors that are able to recharge a battery in less than 30 minutes. Tesla is building these distributors in North America, Europe and Asia. In Italy we have around 30 stations along the main motorways; but they are placed mostly in the North of Italy and it is a problem to move in the rest of the peninsula. For a long time this “Supercharger Network” has been totally free, but recently Tesla has announced that this supercharger is going to become a paid service.

TESLA ENERGY

In April 2015 Elon Musk announced “Tesla Energy”, a project to enter into domotics (home automation) market. This part of the company produces home batteries to reduce electric energy costs. This new battery, called “Powerwall”, takes energy from solar panels or from the electricity network when the home consumption is minimal and stock it creating an energy reserve.

ADVERTISING MARKETING

Elon Musk’ s approach is very simple: no advertising, top quality products and building a workteam including the greatest minds. Tesla Motors centers around his CEO more than other companies. It is enough to think that the account most used by Tesla is the Elon’ s account; his account has more than 39 million followers on Twitter, 33 million more than Tesla. “My organization spends 0$ on advertising and marketing, because our history precedes us!” – Elon Musk Using social media, Musk communicates his passion about his work, without hiding that all of his achievements are due to hard work. Tesla’ s communication is based on two important things: the emotional aspects of Musk’ s life and their customers’ s storytelling (their experience). Luxury marketing is an important success factor for Tesla Motors because it allows the company to position its cars in a niche product. This strategic positioning justifies the price. Other important competitive advantages are constant innovations of the products due to the continuous improvement research, as the car without a driver. Also the supplies are a plus for the company, to mention an example :the charging stations that could be produced only by Tesla. Other important marketing strategies for the company are the “Brand Reputation” (how much and how the name of a product is known and appreciated) and the “Brand Awareness”(the ability of a question to identify a unique brand). Tesla products are unique, innovative and winners of several awards.
