Polarization is a phenomenon caused due to the wave nature of electromagnetic radiation. Sunlight is an electromagnetic wave that crosses the vacuum to reach the earth since they form when an electric field interacts with a magnetic field. A polarizing filter modifies reflected light to provide a cleaner, higher-contrast image by removing light that has been reflected in the scene. Automobiles windshields are made of special tempered glass to maximize the visibility of drivers, polarising the windshield can have an impeccable help during day time as it will reduce some lights that enters to the vehicle, the glare from the sun or the headlights can be blinding. This causes terrible irritation to one’s eyes. To see better and eliminate the discomfort caused by the reflection and deflection of light, some drivers choose to polarizer on their car windshields. Note that car windshields are made of two strong glass layers which many refer to as laminated glass and already comes with low level of polarization. Thus owners wants to install higher level of polarizer to their vehicle to with stand a weather hotter than usual which can result serious accident. During night driving this scheme will fail, even to reduce the glare, the intensity of oncoming light is reduced this may do more harm than good. The filter placed on polarized windshields prevents some light from hitting the eye, so it creates a dimmer view inside the vehicle. Blocking additional light from an already low-light condition can inhibit your vision even more so than the glare of traffic lights. polarizing your windshield can distort how light travels through your car windshield. Thus, you may not see other cars or objects deflecting light until it’s too late. A polarizing filter used to reduce the glare, and this glare is produced by a horizontal light therefore polarizing filters should be arranged to block the horizontal light and to pass the vertical light only so polarizing axes must be arrange horizontally, always remember that when polarizing axes of the two filters are aligned the intensity of light is greater but when the polarizing axes are perpendicular the intensity is zero, no light will come to your vision. In generalization if you want to have a polarizer windshield the angle of the filter of the glass cannot be 0 or 90 degrees so that you can achieve a good vision anytime of the day.
These are the advantages of getting your car windshield polarized. Many polarize the windshield and all other windows on their vehicle to make their car look better. Others do it because it gives them a sense of privacy. However, most car owners polarize their windshields because of the irrefutable benefits that come with them. Which includes,Less glare. This allows the driver to better see their surroundings, especially during daytime,Temperature control. Less light coming through your windshield means less heat in your car. Polarized windshields block solar energy from passing through and heating your car’s interiors. See the importance of heat reflection and Protection from UV rays, Polarized car windshields keep these harmful rays from reaching the occupants inside the car. On the other hand this are some of its disadvantage. Car windshields are heat treated during manufacture to increase their tensile strength. The glass seems flawless to the unaided eye. Wearing polarized eyewear will allow you to view the patterns that the tempering process has left on the windshield. When driving, these patterns may be distracting. Other reasons why it’s not advisable to polarize your car’s windshield include , breaking the law, some states and countries prohibits the use of polarized windshields on automobiles, It’s also expensive, windshield polarization is quite costly. Polarized windshields might risk safety since they reduce glare from particular directions. The effects of polarization on your windshield are quite useful throughout the day. However, because your polarized windscreen is darker than usual at night, the road is riddled with blind spots. Here, the possibilities of crashing with another vehicle or an obstruction are especially high at night, and it impairs vehicle performance. Additionally, your polarized glass may impair ideal visibility owing to its improved capacity to block light rays from specific angles. This is especially important while turning the automobile or when there is an incoming vehicle. Because you cannot see certain angles as clearly as you would if your windshield was not polarized, your visibility is limited. References : Polar coat polarized coating: Polarizing technology.
