Comparing Impacts and Criticisms of Copernican and Darwinian Revolutions, Study Guides, Projects, Research of Forensics

An overview of the copernican and darwinian revolutions, discussing their pros and cons, including natural explanations of planetary motion and the origin of species, the use of circles and epicycles, the role of the catholic church, and the impact on scientific understanding. It also includes references to the works of darwin, freud, and online sources.

PROS OF
COPERNICAN
REVOLUTION
Provides natural
explanation of
retrograde
motion.
Provides natural explanation of
motion of Mercury and Venus as
inferior planets, i.e. their orbits are
interior to that of the Earth.
Provided a
relationship
between distance
from Sun and
orbital period.
Copernicus was able to determine the
orbital radii (relative to Earth orbit) of
all six planets, while in Ptolemy model
the lengths are incorrect.
The heliocentric model of
Copernicus helped to start
modern astronomy

CONS OF
COPERNICAN
REVOLUTION
All motions still
based on circles
Still used minor epicycles
(and other complications)
to predict exact planetary
positions
No stellar parallax
observed
Not inherently
more accurate
than Ptolemaic
scheme
The Catholic church
was against him, so
his ideas did not
prosper at once. His
books and he,
himself, were denied
by society.

Darwinian Revolution

PROS CONS

Darwinism allowed us to gain a better understanding of our world, which in turn allowed us to change the way that we think. Darwin was able to defy the church as well as give scientists and the public the freedom to uncover the truths of nature. Charles Darwin’s work was his teachings on the power of natural selection and mutations. https://getrevising.co.uk/grids/the_theory_of_ evolution He discovered that mutations can prove as beneficial to a society by allowing a species to adapt to environmental changes. There is strong scientific evidence - physiological, fossil and bio-geographical - to support Darwin's ideas The theory of evolution is criticised for a lack of evidence including missing links and inconsistencies The history of science shows how theories can change and in some cases be discarded altogether It is a theory and not a fact Creationists also argue that science has limitations and that it has been very wrong in the past It only tells us how life originated, it doesn't tell us why. It offers nothing for the greater understanding about the purpose of life
