WORD STRESS It is the emphasis we place in a specific syllable of a word when pronouncing it.

WHAT IS

WORD

STRESS?

In English words that have more than one syllable, we usually don’t pronounce every syllable with the same weight, so each syllable in a word can be stressed or unstressed. table expensive interesting

There are two very simple rules about word stress:

The basic rules of sentence stress

are:

1. content words are stressed

2. structure words are unstressed

  • Grammatical or structure words are not stressed (words that help structure a sentence in English but that do not really have some meaning if you put them out of context: a, an, the, is, etc.)

Exceptions

REMEMBER: Even though all content words receive some sort of stress, one content word within the sentence will receive greater stress than all others.

  • To help your listeners focus on what you’re saying, use Super Stress : extra emphasis that is even higher, louder, clearer, and l o n g e r than regular stress.
