In Chapter 2, it highlights the core principles of occupational health and safety which gears towards one essential objective- work should take place in a safe and healthy environment. For these principles and provisions to be effective in its aim, they should be strictly implemented not only at the national level but also in enterprises. It is evident that OSH policies are applied to multidisciplinary fields. Thus, the chapter enumerates basic principles underlying in the multidisciplinary fields. The following include (a) promulgation of worker’s right, (b) establishment of occupational safety and health policies, (c) establishment of a national system for OSH, (d) formulation of national programme on OSH, (e) to involve social partners and other stakeholders in consultation of OSH policies, (f) to aim OSH policies and programs in prevention and protection, (f) promotion of continuous improvement of OSH, (g) collection and dissemination of effective programmes and policies, (h) health promotion as a central element of occupational health practice, (i) establishment of occupational health services covering all workers, (j) immediate availability of compensation, rehabilitation, and curative services to workers who suffer occupational injuries, accidents, and work-related diseases, (k) regard training and education as vital components of safe, healthy working environments, (l) providing workers, employers, and competent authorities with responsibilities, duties, and obligations in OSH practices, and (m) strict implementation of policies. The chapter also features the different rights and duties of governments, employers, and workers that should be “complementary and mutually reinforcing in the promotion of occupational safety and health to the greatest extent possible within the constraints of national conditions and practice” (Ali, 2008). Thus, it highlights how the workers are responsible for their own health and safety as well as the safety of the people around them that may be affected with what they do or what they fail to do; employer’s duties and obligations to ensure the highest standards of a safe and healthy working environment through the protection of workers from occupational risks and entailing knowledge of occupational hazards; and lastly, the governments’ duties of legislating occupational health and safety policies and ensuring that these are implemented from national to enterprise levels. There are three main points that I have learned and would like to highlight in this paper. First, the existence of the core principles mentioned in this chapter. These core principles are well-structured that they cover all multidisciplinary fields under occupational health and safety. However, the continuous occurrence of occupational accidents are still evident in many enterprises and workplaces. For example, small-scale gold mining in Masbate has been prevalent and has led to environmental problems, such as mercury pollution, and it has also resulted in other development problems in the
