Problem 1: Make a list of 25 things in nature that have symmetry. Go outside to search for examples, if needed!

Problem 2: Find an example of a sphere in nature and one thatโ€™s manmade. Whatโ€™s different about them? List at least 4 examples. SPHERE IN NATURE MERCURY With a diameter of 4,879 km (3031.67 mi), Mercury is the smallest planet in our Solar System. In fact, Mercury is not much larger than Earthโ€™s own Moon โ€“ which has a diameter of 3,474 km (2158.64 mi). At 5,268 km (3,273 mi) in diameter, Jupiterโ€™s moon of Ganymede is also larger, as is Saturnโ€™s moon Titan โ€“ which is 5,152 km (3201.34 mi) in diameter. VENUS Venus, thanks to its slow rotation rate, is a nearly perfect sphere. A year on Venus is shorter than a single day on the planet. It takes Venus 224.7 days to orbit the Sun, but 247 days to rotate once on its axis ANGELICA FLOWER HEAD Angelica is a genus of about 60 species of tall biennial and perennial herbs in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, reaching as far north the flowerhead is roughly spherical; each part is similar to the whole head in having a stalk and its own sphere of flowers. as Iceland, Lapland, and Greenland. They grow to 1โ€“3 m (3 ft 3 inโ€“9 ft 10 in) tall, with large bipinnate leaves and large compound umbels of white or greenish-white flowers. WATER DROPS Water drops, or, for that matter, the drops of any other liquid, are spherical in shape due to a phenomenon called surface tension. In a liquid this acts on the surface of a freely falling drop to minimize its area. Compared to other objects, such as an ellipsoid (an egg-shaped object), the ratio between the surface area and the volume is minimum in case of a sphere. Surface tension, in simpler terms, is the tendency of the surface of a liquid to behave like a stretched membrane. This results from the attraction between the molecules in the liquid. Molecules at the surface of any liquid, unlike the ones in the interior, do not experience a uniform attractive force. The ones at the undersurface of liquid and air are attracted more towards the bulk of the liquid. As a consequence, all liquid surfaces, in the absence of any other external force, tend to contract. Since a sphere has got the minimum surface-to-volume ratio, falling liquid drops are always spherical in shape. MAN-MADE Fused solid quartz gyroscopic rotors (GP-B Gyroscope) The most perfect manmade spheres built for NASA's Gravity Probe B spacecraft. There are four spheres onboard, each measuring 3.81 cm (1.5 in) across. Their average departure from mathematically perfect sphericity is 1.8 X10-7 of the diameter. This means that, if scaled up to the size of the Earth, the maximum height/depth of topographic features would be 1.5 m (4.92 ft).
