Liceo U implements flexible learning
December 13, 2020
By: Jambee N. Sisa
Since March 2020, the lives of all the students in the Philippines have been
affected because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This first pandemic has greatly
affected education in the Philippines which enforced the universities to have a
new method of learning. Amid the ongoing situation of COVID-19, Liceo de
Cagayan University decided to implement the Flexible Learning method for the
academic year 2020-2021.
Flexible learning is home-based learning in which the students can learn in both
online and offline instruction. This has been implemented to ensure that the
learning is more convenient and safer for the students in this new normal. In this
way, the students will no longer be required to attend face-face classes since
classes can be done in online and offline settings only.
Liceo U’s flexible home-based learning will make use of either synchronous
learning which is real-time virtual conferencing or asynchronous instruction which
is self-paced learning. All the activities will be done at home without the need for
physical interaction with other students.
In synchronous learning or real-time virtual learning, learning activities are done in
real-time with the teacher online using tools like Google Meet that require the use
of gadgets and an internet connection which is required in this type of learning.
The lessons, videos, and contents will be shown through Google Classroom which
is the online learning platform used by the teachers and students.
On the other hand, self-paced learning, or asynchronous learning are learning
activities that are done independently at one’s own pace. The activities and
instructions occur at home without meeting online or in Google Meet. Students
just need to download learning materials from the online learning platform and
perform the given instruction by the teacher to comply with the requirements at
their own pace.
Liceo U will resume school-based learning once the government will allow the
school to have a face-to-face class.
Liceo U’s flexible learning is the best mode of learning during this time of COVID-
19 pandemic. Students do not need to wait around for face-to-face class. The
university ensures that education will continue during these challenging times. Like
the DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones’ words: “Education can and must continue.”
