-Cuneiform is a system of writing first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia c. 3500-
3000 BCE. It is considered the most significant among the many cultural contributions of the Sumerians
and the greatest among those of the Sumerian city of Urukwhich advanced the writing of cuneiform c.
3200 BCE.
Egyptian hieroglyphs
Egyptian hieroglyphs are among the oldest writing systems in the world, dating back some 5,200
years. Known in ancient Egyptian as the “language of the gods” and said to have been created by
the god of knowledge Thoth, hieroglyphs were vital in the fulfilment of royal duties and were used by
powerful pharaohs and their scribes to record the achievements of their reign. Today, millions of
hieroglyphs in sacred texts, sarcophagi, tombs, and monuments remain as memories of a highly
civilized, bygone era.
Greek alphabet
The greek alphabet has been used since 900 BC to write the Greek Language. It is the first writing
system using a separate symbol for each vowel and consonant and the oldest alphabetic system
that is still in use.
Greek Letters today are used for writing modern greek and symbols in mathematics and science.
The Greek alphabet has its origin in the Phoenician alphabet and in turn gave rise to the Gothic,
Glagolitic, Cyrillic, Coptic, and Latin alphabets.
Roman alphabet
The Roman alphabet is the alphabet that was used by the Romans in ancient times
and that is used for writing most western European languages, including English.
